About Laila Tyrrell

Laila Tyrrell has over 15 years of experience in both Psychology and Speech and Language Therapy (also known as Pathology, for our American readers). Before embarking on a career in Speech and Language Therapy Laila studied Psychology and worked in Forensic Psychology and Research in Oxford. It was during this period that Laila took an interest in the significant impact that breakdowns in communication can have on individuals in every aspect of life. Laila questioned whether if we helped identify and support speech and language difficulties in childhood we can potentially change someone’s life choices and whole life potential. This led her to pursue further training and gain a Master’s Degree in Speech and Language Therapy from the University of Reading. Throughout her career, she has gained valuable experience dealing with a wide spectrum of speech and language disorders. She has worked passionately in various settings such as NHS Clinics, Children’s Centres, private homes, nurseries, mainstream schools, as well as specialist schools spanning the Midlands and Southeast regions of England.

Laila firmly believes in the crucial importance of early identification of speech and language difficulties, recognising that early appropriate diagnosis and intervention is essential. Moreover, she adopts a fun and interactive approach towards therapy whether it be at home or in school. Laila provides individually-tailored and targeted therapy sessions, both in one-on-one and group settings. Her specialisation lies in providing assistance to preschool and primary school-aged children with Developmental Language Disorders and Social Communication and Interaction difficulties.

Laila is a neurodiversity-affirming therapist. Neurodiversity asserts that individuals’ brains function uniquely, and these distinctions are inherent and admirable. Those whose brains deviate from society’s notion of “normal” are classified as neurodivergent. Neurodivergent people may exhibit variances in communication, learning, social preferences, and behaviour. The term “neurodiversity affirming” signifies individuals such as parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists who perceive these cognitive differences as natural. Laila’s objective is to support parents, teachers, caregivers, and neurodivergent individuals by embracing their differences, emphasizing their strengths, and assisting them in developing new skills, rather than attempting to “fix” them.
